portland.jpgPortland Music Venues

It's no secret anymore that Portland is one of the premier places to be for great music right now. On any night of the week there is sure to be a good show playing somewhere - believe me, I have spent many nights in a row seeing show after show. That being said, we also know how difficult it can be to go to a new city and have no idea where to go or what to do. Luckily for everyone, we live in Portland and we know the wheres and the whats of the city and will share some of them with you here. So check back regularly because we will always be updating these items.

Whether you're in a band and want to know where to book your next show or you're just passing through and looking for a place to catch a live set and a cold beer this is where you'll get the information you need to be in the know.

Biddy McGraw’s
Neighborhood pub hosts a variety of Americana, country, folk, bluegrass and Irish traditional. A little smoky (that is, until the Oregon smoking ban goes in to effect) but a whole ton of beers on tap, and good bar snacks. Crystal Ballroom
McMenamins resurrected this defunk ballroom years ago, and have slowly turned it into one of the premier medium sized venues in town. Also one of the few venues that have all ages shows but they divide the room to separate the overs from the unders. Those under 21 you can be front and center at any show but those who like to booze will have to set some distance between themselves and the stage. On the down side, the beer is outrageously priced, and the sound often is poor to fair (suffering from aged equipment and minimal upgrades). Also, the bouncers are known to be a little over the top.

Food: Pub grub
Drinks: Beer, wine, limited cocktails
Seating Capacity: 1500

Dante’s
Dante’s host a variety of acts, and is often packed. This quality W. Burnside venue guarantees a fun night out. Also, sweet VIP upstairs balcony is a good deal if you have a group, as you get your very own cocktail server. They also host a series of low cost (low dough shows) nights worthy of scenesters looking for new bands.

Devil’s Point
Fondly coined “Dante’s Little Sister,” this strip club also does live music shows, mostly in the vein of rockabilly, americana and classic rock. Not sure if I would risk a meal, but great service and cool ambience make this small space an adventurious night out. Stick around after the show to watch the gripping routine of re-staging for the dancers. And don’t be afraid of the hard bouncer, when he smiles he’s real sweet.

Green Room
Honestly, I have never been here. Whether that’s because it is in the NW District, or because the shows never titillate me, I am not sure. However judging by their line up, I would guess it’s a good neighborhood place to play for sad bastard music, or the girl with the guitar thing.

The Know Bar
Tiny, grungy stage/music area where they show movies after music (rather aggressive about it, too). You have to run your own sound, and the booker won't necessarily tell you that so be forewarned. But if you can play on a last thursday (of the month) automatic draw for bands trying to break in to the PDX scene.

Outlaw's
CLOSED as of 10/1/07

Satyricon
The open again closed again Satyricon is back open...for the moment. One of the few all ages venues in PDX, and conveniently located in ChinaTown close to mass transit. Satyricon's bills are usually long and full of rookies, but its worth checking out for the cheap price and good location. Good for small touring acts looking for a younger market.

Produce Row
One of the original Central Eastside hang outs that has a fantastic patio, quality grub, and the weekend live music show. Storm used to play here (in addition to regular Dante's gig) before she went all famous on us. Djs and jazz play out on the patio frequently during the weekdays in the summer.

Rotture
Former Loveland (among other clubs), Rotture has a great venue space upstairs, with an able sound man and competent bartenders. Nice balcony for the summer time, and frequent downstairs dance party makes the crowd as varied as the shows they book. Definitely up and coming venue potential and very professional booker who actually responds relatively quickly to inquiries.

The Tonic Lounge
I have to admit it: I am a sucker for the Tonic Lounge. Even when it used to be a punk rock dive (I am so not punk rock). The sound is awesome, and the venue space is big and airy (although a little dark). The bartenders are usually hot and accommodating, and the price is always right. Mostly bands with training wheels playing here, because the venue itself doesn't have much of a draw. However, you can catch some good tunes on the cheap. The booking agent is also very professional about working with you on shows.

Towne Lounge
Definitely the best small venue in Portland, aside from the sound that can't really be helped. This is where the up and coming go to play. Chances are, any night of the week, you can catch the next big thing playing here. Cover is usually under the $10, too, so its an affordable night out. I do have to say, however, close confines somehow inspire hecklers and it can get very hot.

Drinks: Full Bar

White Eagle
I don't know whether its haunted or not, but I get a creepy feeling when I go to the bathroom. Standard McFair and Beer don't make the eats and drinks exciting, but a steady diet of bluegrass, roots, Americana and rock make shows here usually worth checking out. There is also a reputed haunted hotel that has cheap rooms for bands on the run. Great industrial district and patio that make up for slower than average service. Having played this stage, don't count on a sound tech or good sound…be prepared for some good ol' fashioned hollering and pickin'. Also, random 70s covers are oddly appreciated by the diverse crowd.

One-Offs

15th Street Pub

Decent bills, good sound and lighting and nice bar make this a good place to play a one-off from Portland. Although this venue is downtown Vancouver and also one of the few decent indie live music venues in the 'Couv, crowd can be hit or miss. Be sure to promote. Might be a great place to do a big or private event.

El Corazon
Formerly known as The Offramp. Venue hosting a slew of alt-rock, metal, hardcore, indie and other smaller acts. Extremely small venue, but very intimate. Get there early as the line forms down the street and on cold, windy nights the overhead street creates a wind-tunnel. Cheaper venue which means you’ll see everyone from the college-frat boy to the twelve year old dropped off in the mini-van. Interestingly designed venue, so make sure you don’t get stuck behind a pole situated right in the middle of the floor.

Food: N/A
Drinks: Full bar attached to venue – TVs in there so you can watch some of the opening bands whilst you have a beer.
